The society serves the region between York and Teesside.
"We have a membership of 450 active members who point us in interesting directions, and each year we mix the conventional with some unusual performers." says chairman, Martin Hopper. For th
eir anniversary weekend they have the brilliant Sacconi Quartet, now established as one of the UK's leading string groups following success in the prestigious 2006 London International String Quartet Competition.
"They have been here twice before they became famous, our on-going link with the Royal Northern College of Music, giving us the opportunity of hearing up-coming musicians before they are released onto the concert circuit," says Hooper.
Performing concerts tomorrow evening and Sunday afternoon, their programmes include string quintets by Schubert and Schumann, while they also take part in the society's programme of masterclasses.
"We provided exposure and tuition in music for over 3,500 children each year, and we are equally anxious that they will bring down the average age of audiences."
The church, famed for its outstanding acoustic, has medieval and Norman influences still visible.
Coming up is the folk group, Maerlock, with a fresh presentation of traditional tunes from the British Isles (Dec 13). The Endellion String Quartet will play next year.
