you call Murray Periah and Alfred Brendel lyrical crys
talline!"
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields make the ideal orchestra to celebrate 40 years of the festival's music-making in the Royal Hall.
They have chosen a very popular programme that includes Haydn's Fire Symphony and Bizet's bubbly Symphony in C. The young Dutch violinist, Simone Lamsma adds Saint-Saens' virtuoso showpiece, Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso.
The Young Musicians Series also begins this week with Fiona Sluminska, one of the most brilliant flautists produced by the Royal Northern College of Music. Her choice of Bach, Schubert and Poulenc shows her broad repertoire range (July 22). Though only 16, the Swiss-born pianist, Teo Gheorghin, is already causing a buzz of excitement. He has chosen a programme crammed with jaw dropping brilliance, including Busoni's Carmen Fantasy and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition
(July 23). Rounding off the week, the 2002 BBC Young Musician of the Year, Jennifer Pyke, now 18, plays three of the great violin sonatas by Janacek, Beethoven and Franck (July 25).
