JAZZ
Wakefield Jazz resumes tonight and it would be hard to think of a better choice to start the autumn season than Liane Carroll singing and playing the piano.

Carroll's ability to communicate with an audience is particularly well suited to the intimacy of the Sports Club in Eastmoor Road. There is sure to be a warm welcome back for this endearing performer, whose summer included appearances at Coventry, Wigan and Brecon festivals. Bass guitarist Roger Carey and drummer Mark Fletcher will be her accompanists tonight.

Next week's appearance at Wakefield by the Howard Britz/Jonathan Gee New York-London band represents unknown territory for the Friday night regulars. Gee is a familiar figure at the keyboard, but Britz, on bass, and Will Vinson, on alto saxophone, are British musicians who are based in New York. Add a Californian drummer, Sylvia Cuenca, and trumpeter Quentin Collins to the mix, and you have an intriguing collaboration. Organiser Chris de Saram is happy with the balance of a programme which includes Tim Whitehead, David Newton, Benn Clatworthy, Peter King, John Etheridge , Christian Garrick and the Alan Barnes Ellingtonians playing arrangements by former Leeds College of Music tutor Tony Faulkner.
