BIG Brother launched in the UK in 2000, the year after the first ever show was a hit in the Netherlands. Here are some of the highlights from the past decade:
Big Brother One (2000)The show launched with cameras watching 10 housemates 24 hours a day at a house in Bow, east London, and Davina McCall presenting the live eviction show.
Interest in the show increased when "Nasty" Nick B
ateman was booted out in the fifth week for writing notes which he showed to contestants to try to influence their eviction nominations.
He was also caught out fibbing to his fellow housemates and was confronted by eventual winner builder Craig Phillips in dramatic scenes which made front page news.
Phillips, whose victory was watched by 10 million people, immediately announced he was giving his £70,000 prize fund to his friend Joanne Harris, who had Down's syndrome, to pay for her heart and lung transplant.
Within six days of his victory, he had collected the remainder of the £250,000 needed.
Harris died in April last year.
The series also marked the first romance although housemates Tom McDermott and Claire Strutton only got together after the series.
The couple, who had a son, have since split up.
Celebrity Big Brother (2001)Celebrities Anthea Turner, Chris Eubank, Claire Sweeney, Keith Duffy, Vanessa Feltz and Jack Dee went into the house for a Comic Relief special.
Feltz found it difficult to cope with the pressure and she screamed and swore at Big Brother as well as scrawling on the house table with chalk.
Dee, who escaped for several hours on the second day and ran out during Turner's eviction to shout "I love you" to his wife, was the eventual winner.
Big Brother Two (2001)Viewers saw love blossoming between housemates Paul Clarke and Helen Adams.
Ditzy hairdresser and dance teacher Helen was particularly popular with viewers due to her habit of saying whatever came into her head, including the classic line "I like blinking, I do!"
The couple started dating after the show ended and stayed together for almost five years.
The show was won by Ryanair flight attendant Brian Dowling who went on to present SMTV Live, becoming one of the first openly gay children's TV presenters.
Big Brother Three (2002)An unlikely reality star was born when Jade Goody, a 20-year-old dental nurse from Bermondsey, south London, entered the new house in Elstree, Hertfordshire, in the first live launch show.
Jade was unpopular with her fellow housemates who accused her of backstabbing but her gaffes entertained viewers.
She bared all when she stripped naked during a late-night drinking game and yelled: "My kebab's showing!"
Jade, who turned 21 during her time in the house, also earned sympathy when PJ rejected her after the pair fumbled under the duvet during a drunken night.
She came fourth but went on to become the most successful housemate, earning millions from magazine deals and her own reality television show, before she was accused of bullying and racism during a celebrity version of the show in 2007.
The public forgave her when the mum of two was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year and thousands mourned her death in March.
Kate Lawler, 22, who became the first woman to win the reality television contest, went on to work as a model, DJ and TV presenter.
Celebrity Big Brother Two (2002)Take That star Mark Owen proved that nice guys can win when he triumphed simply by being pleasant and charming.
The series is also remembered for Les Dennis's depression after his split from wife Amanda Holden.
Dennis, who was runner-up, later said taking part was not his wisest decision.
The other contestants were Melinda Messenger, Sue Perkins, Anne Diamond and Goldie.
Big Brother Four (2003)Criticised by some for being dull, the series was won by self-proclaimed virgin Cameron Stout, from Orkney, whose stint included swapping places with a contestant from the African version of the show for a week.
Teen Big Brother (2003)A replacement for the celebrity version of the show, the teen version was prerecorded and the contestants themselves chose who should win a round-the-world trip.
Paul Brennan was voted the winner but the show is best remembered for Jade Dyer and Tommy Wright becoming the first Big Brother UK contestants to have sex on the show.
Big Brother Five (2004)Billed as "Big Brother turns evil", the housemates were forced to share a bedroom in a smaller, more claustrophobic house.
The prize fund also fell depending on how housemates performed during tasks.
Eventual winner Nadia Almada received £63,500 of a possible £100,000.
The Madeiran transsexual did not reveal to housemates that she was born a man but her former identity was revealed by newspapers during the series.
Nadia, who later said she entered in an attempt to be accepted as a woman, was hugely popular with viewers due to her volatile nature, humour and eccentricities which included showering in her 6-inch high heeled sandals.
The series also became notorious when the live stream was cut and police were called after violence broke out in week three after housemates Michelle Bass and Emma Greenwood returned after a spell watching the main house from a Big Brother Bedsit.
Emma and Victor Ebuwa had to be dragged apart, Jason Cowan threatened to rip Marco Sabba's head off and Vanessa Nimmo had a furious bust-up with Nadia as the night spiralled out of control.
Emma was returned to the bedsit and was later removed from the show.
The series also saw bookies pay out on bets on the first Big Brother bonk after romance blossomed between Michelle and Stuart Wilson.
The couple were coy at first but Michelle later said they did have sex under a table, hidden from cameras by a sheet.
Sadly their romance did not last outside the show.
Big Brother Panto (2004/5)Ten former Big Brother housemates including Nick Bateman and Jade Goody took part in a show which trained them to perform in a panto.
Goody won the only public vote which chose who would play Cinderella.
Celebrity Big Brother Three (2005)Happy Mondays dancer Mark "Bez" Berry triumphed in a series which included actress Brigitte Nielsen and her former mother-in-law Jackie Stallone.
The other contestants were Caprice Bourret, Germaine Greer, Jeremy Edwards, John McCririck, Kenzie and Lisa I'Anson.
Big Brother Six (2005)The sixth series went down as one of the sauciest.
Winner Anthony Hutton remained a nice guy in viewers' eyes despite a raunchy romp with Makosi Musambasi in the pool.
He said they did not go all the way yet Makosi later claimed in the Diary Room that she could be pregnant.
Anthony's sensitive handling of gay housemate Craig's unrequited infatuation for him also had viewers gripped as Craig became more obsessed as the series went on.
There was also romance for Saskia Howard-Clarke and Maxwell Ward yet it was Kinga Karolczak who provided the biggest shock with her x-rated antics.
Scenes in which she simulated sex with a wine bottle prompted dozens of complaints - and accusations that the programme had sunk to a new low.
Celebrity Big Brother Four (2006)In a house full of famous faces, it was fake pop star Chantelle Houghton who went on to win.
Dippy Chantelle's sweet personality won over viewers as well as fellow housemate Preston from the Ordinary Boys.
The couple later married but are now divorced.
The series also offered disgraced comic Michael Barrymore the chance to win back fans, coming second, but perhaps the most memorable moment of the series was seeing Respect MP George Galloway pretending to be a cat, purring and licking imaginary milk from the hands of actress Rula Lenska.
Big Brother Seven (2006)Tourette's sufferer Pete Bennett endeared himself to viewers throughout the series and it was no surprise when he won.
During his time in the house, he raised awareness of the condition which led him to twitch and swear involuntarily.
Pete charmed other housemates too and it was fiery former anorexic Nikki Grahame who won his heart despite her legendary tantrums although the couple split within weeks once outside the house.
Celebrity Big Brother Five (2007)The show was engulfed in a storm of controversy after former contestant Jade Goody moved in with the housemates.
Thousands of viewers complained about racist bullying of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty by Goody, singer Jo O'Meara and model Danielle Lloyd yet ratings soared.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown described the comments as "offensive", Carphone Warehouse suspended its sponsorship of the show and Hertfordshire Police investigated allegations but took no further action.
Unaware of the controversy, Goody called her housemate Shilpa "Poppadom" but by the time she was evicted she had realised the offence she had caused and said she was terrified of facing the public.
Shetty was later voted the winner.
Goody tried to redeem herself by appearing on the Indian version of the show but had to leave when she was told she had cervical cancer.
Shetty said she made peace with Goody prior to her death this year.
Big Brother Eight (2007)Dopey but sweet again proved a winning formula when Brian Belo won the series, beating the bookies' favourites twins Sam and Amanda.
Alleged racism once again marred the show when Emily Parr was removed from the house for using the word "n*****" while dancing with housemate Charley Uchea.
Channel 4 accepted Emily meant no offence when she said "Are you pushing it out you n*****?" but Emily was removed for breaking the rules.
The incident was not shown live but Channel 4 bosses faced criticism screening the word in a highlights show which it said gave context to the day's events.
Big Brother: Celebrity Hijack (2008)After the controversy of the previous year's celebrity show, the new format saw celebrities set the house rules for a day at a time for unknown contestants.
Political campaigner John Loughton won the show.
Big Brother Nine (2008)The first eviction was cancelled after contestant Alexandra De-Gale was thrown off the show for intimidating other housemates.
Channel 4 said that during her nominations De-Gale allegedly threatened her fellow housemates with punishment from "gangster friends".
Trainee teacher Rachel Rice won the show, beating blind radio producer Mikey Hughes in a close final where Rice took 51.3% of the public votes.
Celebrity Big Brother Six (2009)Former weathergirl Ulrika Jonsson was crowned the winner, beating music journalist Terry Christian in the final, despite being put up for every public eviction during the three-week contest.
Big Brother Ten (2009)Former housemates including Craig Phillips, Nikki Grahame and Brian Belo returned to the house to pit themselves against current contestants as part of the celebration of the 10th series.
"Nasty" Nick Bateman had been due to appear but pulled out after a disagreement with producers.
The series finishes next month.
