The University of Bradford has received £1million to develop new ways to reduce avoidable hospital admissions among care home residents.

The study, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, hopes to develop and test guidance using nursing home staff, family members, and volunteers from the Alzheimer’s Society. By spotting changes in residents’ health early, they hope to be able to manage conditions in homes and avoid hospitalisation.

Prof Murna Downs, head of the school of dementia studies, who will head the study, said: “We are committed to carrying out cutting-edge research that improves lives and addresses some of the biggest issues in society today, including an aging population.”
