A 22-year-old Oxford University maths graduate is to fill Carol Vorderman's shoes on Countdown.

Rachel Riley, described as a maths genius, said her new position on the Yorkshire Television show was "the best graduate job in the world".

She fought off strong competition from more than 1,000 applicants to take over from Cambridge graduate Vorderman, who spent 26 years on the show.

Five shortlisted candidates put up letter selections and tackled problems at the numbers board during a screen test in Leeds .

"There's only one cool maths job around and I was lucky enough to get it so I'm absolutely thrilled," said Riley.

Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling is the new host and both will be seen for the first time in January.
