500 tons of waste goes up in flames

Firefighters in North Yorkshire were called out after reports of a rubbish fire during the early hours of today.

When they arrived at the scene, they discovered up to 500 tons of shredded waste material was ablaze. The incident happened at a recycling plant in Great Heck, near Selby at about 1.30am.

A spokesman said although the fire was out, crews would be returning to the scene today. The cause was put down to spontaneous combustion.
