Just one of the 66 post offices that was threatened with closure in South Yorkshire, north Derbyshire, Huddersfield and the Colne Valley has been granted a reprieve, despite numerous hard-fought campaigns by protesters.

Wadsley Bridge Post Office, based in Leppings Lane garage in Sheffield, will remain open - but Post Office bosses remained tight lipped on why this branch should be singled out to be saved.

The leader of Sheffield Council, councillor Paul Scriven, said: "I'm delighted for the people served by Wadsley Bridge Post Office.

"However, the same foresight should have been applied to the rest of the threatened branches."

Adrian Wales, Post Office Ltd's network development manager for the north east region, said the branch closures were "difficult decisions which have not been taken lightly."

He added: "We have considered very carefully all the comments made during the public consultation.

"We believe that the plan announced today offers our customers in this area the best prospect for a sustainable network in the future, bearing in mind the Government's minimum access criteria and the other factors the Government has asked us to consider."and the other factors the Government has asked us to consider."
