A £240,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund will allow the town’s council to buy the Manorial Court Rolls from the present Lord of Conisbrough.

The records date from 1265 to 1935 and cover 15 former townships in Doncaster, 12 in Rotherham and one in Barnsley.

David Renwick, head of the lottery fund in Yorkshire, said: “From bootlegging beer and fighting in the street to the loves and losses of local families, the Conisbrough Court Rolls provide an intriguing, and perhaps quite familiar window into life in medieval Doncaster.

“This project will paint a picture of the community throughout the ages.”
