Intrepid sailors gearing up for the tall ships race were given a royal 'bon voyage' yesterday when the Princess Royal toured two of the ships, currently docked in Liverpool, in preparation for the five-week race to Den Helder in the Netherlands, by way of Bergen in Norway.

Last night, the Duke of York was due to visit the STS Lord Nelson, the only tall ship in the history of the competition with an all-female crew.

More than 3,000 trainee sailors on 60 vessels from 18 countries will be taking part in the two-stage race that begins with a 'parade of sail' down the Mersey estuary on Monday.

After visiting the Danish ship Jens Krogh, the Princess Royal boarded the Ocean Spirit of Moray, a modern tall ship owned and operated by the Scottish public school Gordonstoun, which her father, brothers and both her children attended.
