SCRAPPING tolls on the Humber Bridge could give the economy in the area a £1.1 billion boost, a report claimed today.
Commissioned by the four councils around the Humber, the report will be used to step up pressure to ditch the charges, which currently cost cars £2.70 each way.
The research said scrapping the tolls would give the region's economy a £39 million benefit in 2009 reaching £1.1 billion in the period 2009-2032.
Reducing the tolls to £1 would benefit the region by £22 million in 2009, and £580 million over the period up to 2032.
It concluded the tolls were a barrier both economically and socially, hampering labour markets but also limiting people's social activities.
