Cereal bar fuels Everest team

THE first British mountaineers to scale Everest via the notoriously dangerous West Ridge have a secret weapon – a fruit and nut bar devised by Yorkshire scientists.
The team of mountaineers, now close to finishing the expedition, are getting regular energy boosts from tbe cereal bars containing oats, Rice Crispies, fruit and nuts.
The recipe took three years to develop and the compact snacks were created to withstand temperatures below freezing so that climbers do not damage their teeth. The packaging can be unwrapped with gloved hands, so the bars can be consumed easily and restore energy quickly.
The Carnegie Research Institute at Leeds Metropolitan University and the Cadbury Schweppes Global Science Centre developed them.
Professor Rod King, of the Carnegie Research Institute, said they "contain a specific balance of carbohydrate, fat and protein with added vitamins and minerals to ensure efficient use of these macro-nutrients during active climbing".
The Army team of 40 including Dave Bunting and Alastair Mason, of Harrogate, Pete Longbottom, of Halifax, and Jude Humphries, of Pateley Bridge, started on March 23 and should finish between Friday and Saturday. They halted earlier this week due to falling snow.
