A headteacher is hailing the success of a scheme that offered chocolate to pupils in return for good behaviour.

Andrew Sheppard, of Redcastle Furze Primary School, in Thetford, Norfolk, said there had been no exclusions since the plan started three years ago.

The move, introduced after pupils had 65 exclusion days in the 2004/05 academic year, was widely criticised at the time for "bribing" children.

Dr Sheppard said there were complaints about bribery, childhood obesity and rotting teeth "but the children really liked it and it really works. It has improved behaviour."

In September 2005, Dr Sheppard pledged to give all 240 pupils a bar of chocolate if they made it to the half time break without any exclusions.
