Cleared police officer found dead
A POLICE officer recently cleared of a racist assault on a woman was found dying after being reported missing from home, his force has confirmed.
PC Anthony Mulhall was reported missing from his Rotherham home on Wednesday and was found by a mountain rescue team on Mount Snowdon in Wales in a serious condition on Thursday.
He was airlifted to hospital but died yesterday and an investigation has now begun to establish the circumstances of his death.
A post mortem is expected to be carried out to establish exactly how he died.
Last year the officer was filmed on CCTV repeatedly striking reveller Toni Cromer outside the Niche nightclub in Eyre Street, Sheffield, as he attempted to arrest her and found himself at the centre of an investigation after she complained about the incident.
At the time he admitted using force as he arrested the suspect for criminal damage but maintained his actions were an accepted technique because she was resisting arrest.
He was removed from front line policing duties, though was not suspended, while an investigation was carried out into the circumstances of the incident by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and earlier this year he was cleared of any wrongdoing.
The Crown Prosecution Service also examined the circumstances and decided to take no action.
South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable has paid tribute to the officer and said: "This is terrible news and our condolences go out to his family.
"PC Mulhall was highly regarded and will be missed by his colleagues and friends."
The officer, 41, had spent 11 years with the force and also served on firearms duties.
It is not believed there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding PC Mulhall's death and it is expected an inquest will be held in Wales, where he died.
The tragedy happened four months after the Michael Todd, the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester, was found dead in the same region.
