IT was a family affair in the dairy cattle section at Driffield Show when James Waring took the championship with his Holstein and his mother Judith took the reserve with a Jersey.
Both were home-bred animals from bloodstock herds they run with Mrs Waring's husband, Peter, at Cherry Burton, near Beverley.
The Jersey, a second-calver, was on show for the first time and its success illustrated a bright spot in the bluetongue disease outbreak, which according to show officials was an opportunity for fresh blood in the winners' lists, normally dominated by the same names and the same animals for years at a time.
The supreme beef animal was a Simmental shown by a young farmer, Tom Hill of Wadworth, near Doncaster, who inherited the winning five-year-old from his grandfather, who imported her from Denmark before he died.
The shifting boundaries of bluetongue zones had their predictable effect – a third of the potential cattle and sheep entries being withdrawn and there were few goats.
Government disease containment strategy was the talk of the day among farmers.
Cattleman Ken Jackson of Stubbs Walden, near Doncaster, summed up their views saying: "Last Sunday night, we couldn't have come here. Now we can, but we can't go to Malton on Sunday. But none of the animals have been vaccinated yet, so why? It's a complete farce."
The main problem caused by bluetongue was uncertainty with farmers reluctant to prepare animals for showing then find they could not move them.
Geoff Riby, of Fraisthorpe, near Bridlington, who took the Interbreed Supreme Champion with his Suffolk ewe would normally have taken a few of his beef cattle to Driffield as well, but he said: "I couldn't have faced the disappointment of putting in two months effort and then not being able to show them. It's different with the sheep. I knew I'd get them in somewhere."
Before bluetongue reduced cattle entries they had actually been up on previous years so there was still good competition with around 120 cattle, against a projected 170 and 130 sheep against 200 last year.
