The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem riding on a donkey was commemorated in Leeds yesterday, at the beginning of the most important week in the Christian calendar culminating in Easter next Sunday.

Following the blessing of palms a donkey led clergy, the choir and parishioners through the city streets from The Light shopping centre to Leeds Parish Church for the Palm Sunday Eucharist.

The 19-year-old donkey, named Eeyore, was on loan from The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys in Eccup, Leeds.

Eeyore is one of 19 donkeys cared for by the charity . Cathryn Williams, who runs the Trust in Leeds, said: "The donkeys really do help make a tactile link to the Biblical Easter story."
