A RAMPAGING bullock was shot dead today by a police marksman after escaping onto one of the main routes through North Yorkshire.
The animal managed to escape onto the westbound carriage of the A64 near York at about 9.30am.

It suffered minor injuries when it was hit by a Vauxhall Astra car after several near misses with other vehicles while it was on the road between the Hopgrove roundabout and Grimston Bar.

An elderly couple in the Astra were uninjured and the damage to the car was only minor following the collision about 20 minutes after the animal had escaped from a nearby livestock centre.

The bullock was shot at about 11am after police were given authorisation from its owners.

The west-bound carriage of the A64 was closed by police and a rolling block was placed on the east-bound carriageway while the incident was dealt with.

Both carriageways were re-opened shortly after 11am.
