The BBC has dropped part of a forthcoming ballet after learning it contained graphic scenes of a hunchback Pope garrotting a pregnant woman with rosary beads.
Eternal Damnation To Sancho And Sanchez by Javier de Frutos was due to be shown over the Christmas period, but when BBC4 bosses became aware of the graphic sexual nature of the ballet, it was pulled from the schedule.
The scenes, deemed unsuitable for its pre-watershed time slot, take place in one of In The Spirit Of Diaghilev's four acts, but the channel will still broadcast the other three acts from last month's Sadler's Wells show.
A BBC spokesman said: "When we announced we were showing it, at the time we weren't fully aware of the details of the ballet."
Theatre critics reviewing the ballet, a homage to the Russian dance impresario Sergei Diag-hilev, described Venezuelan choreographer de Frutos's contribution as "violent", "lurid" and "deliberately offensive". The revised per-formance is on December 18.
