Rescue experts began work yesterday to salvage the body of an engineer who died after a mudslide caused the trench he was working in to collapse.

The 27-year-old man from Cheltenham was surveying a site in Brimscombe Lane, Stroud, in Gloucestershire, when one of the mud walls caved in on Friday afternoon.

The collapse is thought to have been caused by torrential rainfall weakening the trench walls. The technical engineer was pronounced dead at the scene but firefighers were initially unable to free his body because of safety fears.

Specialist equipment has now been brought in to make the area safe and rescue workers hoped to have recovered the body by late last night.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.
