Madonna screens plea over Aids
Madonna last night introduced a screening in Cannes of her documentary about the devastating effects of Aids in Malawi, saying the film was a "labour of love".
The hard-hitting I Am Because We Are, featuring interviews with former United States president Bill Clinton among others, shows a stark picture of desperate poverty and children orphaned by Aids. It also highlights how education can help the situation.
"Queen of Pop" Madonna received a round of applause as she entered the building in the French city .
The cinema audience included film star Sharon Stone.
Madonna said: "To say that this film is a labour of love is true but that's kind of trivial because really what it is is a journey of a lifetime."
Director Nathan Rissman told the audience that it was amazing to have someone such as Madonna believe in him.
He said: "I'm so excited to be here."
Earlier, Madonna arrived on the red carpet outside the screening of Che during the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
