A man arrested after a car hit three teenage girls – one said to have been in a wheelchair – in West Yorkshire has been released on bail, police said yesterday.

One girl was said to be in a serious but stable condition in Leeds General Infirmary after the accident involving a Ford Focus in Wakefield Road, Normanton, at 9.10pm on Friday. Two girls were treated for minor injuries.

The landlady of the Hark To Mopsey pub, who did not want to be named, said customers rushed out to help after they heard screeching tyres and smelled burning rubber.

The local girls were believed to be about 15. It was unclear whether they were crossing the road or on the footpath when hit but the landlady said the car halted after it mounted the pavement.

Anyone with information should call Wakefield Road Traffic, 01924 295436.
