SCARBOROUGH, with its population of just 50,000, has beaten competition from overseas cities to be named the most enterprising place in Europe, it was announced today.
Scarborough won the European Commission accolade in recognition of its work to encourage people to start up and grow businesses and create jobs.

The resort, already named as the most enterprising place in Britain, was up against European cities including Finland's capital Helsinki, Spain's second biggest port, Valencia and Liege in Belgium.

Scarborough's winning bid was led by the Scarborough Renaissance Partnership, a coalition of local entrepreneurs, council staff and residents, which transformed what was a seaside resort in decline into a thriving enterprise hotspot.

Achievements include stamping out seasonal unemployment, diversifying to grow new industry sectors and attracting more than £200 million of private sector investment.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson, said: "A strong enterprise culture inspires communities and creates jobs - something which is vital during these uncertain economic times.

"I would like to congratulate the Scarborough Renaissance Partnership on their success and in being recognised not just as the most enterprising place in UK but in Europe."

Tony Peers, leader of the Partnership's Town Team which steers the project, said: "The whole town has embraced the enterprise cause and to be recognised again in this way will really spur us on to become even more enterprising in the future - especially given the current economic climate.

"Coastal towns have traditionally experienced economic challenges so I hope what we've achieved inspires people to see that there is light at the end of the tunnel if entrepreneurs are supported and encouraged."

Amaroo,

Is it April 1st ?

Can someone actually inform me as to what this so called 'prestigious' award will do for Scarborough as a town. The first 'Enterprise' award was going to bring jobs and business into Scarborough. It hasn't.

The back slapping 'Enterprise Gang' will be in their element. These people have no interest in Scarborough, Their main interest are their businesses and to get on high profile committees, if being on a committee brings Scarborough into the spotlight then that's a bonus.

Tony Peers, leader of the Partnership's Town Team which steers the project, said: "The whole town has embraced the enterprise". What a load of rubbish. They certainly did not. It was a select band of business men, himself included that jumped on the bandwagon.
It begs belief as to how Scarborough was even nomintated and considered in the first place. We have a North Side that is a vast wasteland, we have a Mere and surrounding area a vast wasteland along with a Futurist theatre that has been recommended to be demolished. All Council owned. Obviously the areas commented on like The Sands were not visited by the judges or whoever.

Peasholm Park now relies on the goodwill of the public to maintain it as with Dean Road cemetery.

We have a Park & Ride transport system that begs belief and does not and never will work. We have a traffic light system that brings the town to a standstill most days.

The roads in and around Scarborough are worse than a third world country.

Yet we win this so called 'prestigious' award !!!!

It begs belief as to what the other entrants were like.

Went to Scarborough last week and loved it. What a transformation! The museum, art gallery, theatre are superb. The Valley is a revelation. So what if there are some grubby bits; every town and city has areas it would prefer not to have. Ever been to Milan ?
