Rescue workers were last night attempting to save 100 "stressed" sheep marooned by 6ft of rising floodwater.

The animals huddled together on a patch of higher land at Fisherwick Hall Farm, in Lichfield, Staffordshire.

Twelve RSPCA workers and a team of firefighters were called to the scene to carry the sheep to safety.

But a spokeswoman for the animal charity said the operation was proving "tricky".

She said: "They are very stubborn and very nervous so it has been difficult.

"It's the biggest job we've had over this weekend.

"We are concerned for the welfare of these sheep as the water has risen at such an alarming rate.

"The animals are clearly stressed."
