Manchester United clinched a tense and tight victory over Chelsea in the Champions League final last night after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.
As the red half of Moscow's Luzhniki stadium celebrated, the blue half quietly slunk back to the hotel bars to drown their sorrows.

Little violence was expected, with more than 7,000 Russian police officers keeping a close watch over both sets of
supporters, whose passions were dampened by the driving rain and a ban on drinking in the street.

Manchester United took the lead through Cristiano Ronaldo's 42nd goal of the season. United dominated the first half, but a 45th-minute equaliser from Frank Lampard sent Chelsea back to the dressing room with hopes raised.

Under the watchful eye of owner Roman Abramovich, the Russian oligarch, Chelsea started the second half stronger, coming closest to taking the lead through a Didier Drogba shot in the 82nd minute, which slammed into the post.

With players growing increasingly tetchy the match slipped into extra time. Lampard came close again, as did Ryan Giggs at the other end.

As tempers flared, players squared up to each other late on – resulting in a red card for Chelsea striker Drogba for slapping United defender Nemanja Vidic.

And then it was penalties. After Ronaldo and John Terry both missed, United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar was the hero, saving the crucial penalty from Nicolas Anelka as United completed a glorious League and European Cup double.
