In a new planning application to North Yorkshire County Council the company has reduced the area near the three Thornborough Henges in North Yorkshire from 111 acres to 76 acres.
The revised scheme at Ladybridge Farm at Nosterfield, north of Ripon,
follows refusal of the original application earlier this year after a controversy over the possible effects on the setting of the 4,500-year-old henges.
The latest application, which North Yorkshire's planning committee is expected to determine before the end of the year, avoids the south west section of the site to address concerns raised by English Heritage and the Friends of Thornborough Henges.
Tarmac estates manager Bob Nicholson, said: "Both North Yorkshire County Council and English Heritage were particularly anxious to preserve the south west part of Ladybridge Farm. The land there is higher and they feel that this area has the potential to be of archaeological significance.
"Having listened carefully to the comments made by councillors at the meeting and following subsequent discussions with officers of the county council and English Heritage, we hope that the revised application offers a way forward for all parties.
"A great deal of public debate has understandably surrounded the development of Ladybridge Farm. We believe this revised application serves to demonstrate that we understand the concerns of the community, North Yorkshire County Council and English Heritage."
Chairman of the Friends of Thornborough Henges Jon Lowry welcomed the reduction in the application site, but said Tarmac had not gone far enough to protect the setting of the Henges. "They may think that there is nothing in the area they want to quarry, but there may be significant archaeology. We still think it should be refused."
Tarmac is seeking to extend its existing Nosterfield Quarry, which produces 25 per cent of the county's sand and gravel requirement. The extension would safeguard the jobs of 15 employees and another 40 hauliers.
