TWO brothers were among three football fans from Yorkshire who died in a car crash on their way home from watching England's World Cup qualifying match at Wembley.

Tony Worby, 25, and his 21-year-old brother Jonathan, of Rowlestone Rise in Bradford, were killed at the scene when the car they were travelling in left the northbound carriageway of the M1 near Rotherham and smashed into a road sign.

Gareth Rhode
s, 23, of Lavell Mews, Bradford, also suffered fatal injuries. He was taken to Rotherham District General Hospital but died just under two hours later.

The silver Ford Mondeo they were travelling in left the road at about 9.40pm on Saturday.

South Yorkshire Police said the three men were travelling home from London after watching England beat Kazakhstan 5-1 in the World Cup qualifying match at Wembley.

The accident happened at junction 32 of the M1, near an exit slip road to the M18.

A police spokesman said it was believed the Mondeo was travelling in the outside lane before it moved across the motorway onto the hard shoulder, where it went over a barrier and struck a road sign.

All three men suffered head and internal injuries.

The police spokesman said an investigation was under way but it was not yet known who was driving the vehicle.

He said the families of the men were devastated and had asked to be left alone to grieve in private.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police's witness helpline on 0114 2202970.

The crash was one of a series of fatal accidents at the weekend. A motorcyclist from West Yorkshire was killed in a crash on the A684 in North Yorkshire as the black Kawasaki he was riding hit a blue Ford Focus. The crash happened at Aysgarth at 3pm on Saturday.

The rider, a man in his 40s, was certified dead at the scene by paramedics. He has not yet been named by police.

Traffic officers believe he was one of three motorcyclists riding from Hawes towards Leyburn.

Police closed the A684 for five hours on Saturday to study the crash scene.

The occupants of the Focus, who were from the Newcastle area, suffered serious injuries and were taken to the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton, where they stayed overnight.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact Richmond Road policing on 0845 6060247.

Elsewhere, another motorcyclist was killed and a second left in a critical condition after an accident on the B4029 in Warwickshire, on Saturday at 3.15pm.

A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "Crews found two motorcycles and two seriously injured motorcyclists.

"One motorcyclist, a man, suffered serious multiple injuries and, despite the best efforts of ambulance crews, nothing could be done to save him and unfortunately he was confirmed dead at the scene."

The second man was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
