LIGHTNING strikes caused disruption to trains in West Yorkshire this afternoon, with services on some routes delayed by nearly an hour.
A flash flood at Morley meant that train speeds had to be reduced for some time but Network Rail said the situation was back to normal by 3.20pm.
However, as the evening rush hour approached, trains between Huddersfield and Manchester Piccadilly, and between Huddersfield and Manchester Victoria were being delayed by up to 50 minutes.
Electrical equipment was damaged by lightning on the Leeds-Morley line which affected signals and caused delays. A lighting strike also caused problems on the Halifax-Bradford line, which meant trains had to travel slower. Another strike caused problems north of York.
Lights at Leeds city station went off but there was no risk to safety as back-up lights took over.
No routes were closed.
Leeds Council said six traffic lights were put out of action by the lightning.
