A new world record was set yesterday when 600 Morris dancers performed the Dorset Four-Hand Reel together on the beach at Scarborough's South Bay.
Morris dancers from as away as Aberdeen had travelled to Scarborough to mark the 30th anniversary of the Yorkshire Coast Morris and the 20th anniversary of the annual Scarborough Fair Morris Weekend.
The previous record for the most Morris dancers performing the same dance together for five minutes stood at 200. John Gorton, the foreman or trainer of Yorkshire Coast Morris, said: "We are still counting, but we have certainly broken the record. In fact we have smashed it into smithereens."
Throughout the weekend Morris dancers performed
in Scarborough, Whitby,
Robin Hood's Bay, Filey and Bridlington.
