Migrant workers who were given their marching orders by a Yorkshire engineering firm after joining a union have won a legal battle with their former bosses.
The 21 ex-staff of Selby-based Bringate Welding Services will now share £55,000 compensation awarded by an employment tribunal in Leeds.
The workers – all Poles – were employed as welders and operators. They joined the engineering union GMB because they were concerned about health and safety.
Several were called into a meeting at a few minutes' notice and told they must leave as they had been made redundant, the union said.
A few weeks later the company went into insolvency and others lost their jobs.
The tribunal awarded compensation because there was no reasonable consultation and several former workers will also receive payments for automatic unfair dismissals because of the firm's unreasonable behaviour.
Bringate ceased trading last March and is now in liquidation.
