ARMY bomb disposal experts have exploded a a massive wartime bomb uncovered near the M62 in East Yorkshire.
The motorway was closed in both directions from junction 37 to junction 38 for around three hours as the Army team detonated the device in a field at Balkholme, near Howden.

The wartime bomb was found by a metal detecting fan on New Year's Day, close to the B1230.

It is thought to be related to a crash involving two British bombers in the area in 1944.

After the blast, police and Army officers carried out road checks and safety checks of the surrounding area, while utility companies made sure local supplies were unaffected.

Local roads were reopened a short time later with the M62 being reopened to traffic at 1.05pm - two hours earlier than expected.
