A violent thief who raped and murdered a great grandmother has been sentenced to death by hanging in a Tunisian court.

Jalloul Khalfi attacked holidaymaker Violet Bradford in the resort of Monastir, Tunisia, after the 71-year-old refused to let him take her handbag.

In broad daylight the killer got off his bike, badly beat the pensioner, strangled her with her own skirt and raped her as she lay unconscious.

The widow's heartbroken daughter, Linda Benn, of South Kirkby, near Pontefract, welcomed the death sentence.

She said: "That is what we have been fighting for, the outcome is the one we wanted. That man is the lowest of the low, doing what he did to a 71-year-old. He is disgusting. If I had my way, I would be at the hanging."
