First celebrated in New York in 1909, International Women’s Day (and yes, before anyone asks there is an International Men’s Day - it’s on November 19) became a worldwide event in the 1970s after it was backed by the United Nations.

This year the theme is #BeBoldForChange and as organisers call on women everywhere to forge a better world, we asked some great and good Yorkshire women what advice they would give their younger selves.
