Jack Barstow was born in Burley, Leeds, on October 31, 1912.

He left Burley Road Council School at the age of 14 and got a job as a paperboy.

At 16, he joined a printing firm in Leeds where he worked for nearly 50 years.

During the Second World War he was attached to the 51st Highland Division, serving in Egypt, Italy and Greece.

He returned to Leeds after the war where he married and had two children.

He set up a bowls tournament for the over 90s and still plays at the North Leeds Bowling Club.

A skilled draughtsman he has provided drawings for a reference book on birds.

He still repairs old and classic clocks.
