Armitstead still on track after double delight
IT proved a golden weekend for Otley's Lizzie Armitstead when she claimed two titles at the Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester.
The 20-year-old followed up gold in the women's points race on Saturday by helping the women take the Team Pursuit title yesterday, where she also contributed to a new world record time.
It marks another remarkable step in the rise of Armitstead with London 2012 the ultimate focus.
"It was one of the hardest points races I've ever done," said Armitstead, following Saturday's triumph.
"They're hard enough when you've got good form and when you're slightly off they're just painful from beginning to end."
After working with team-mates Joanna Rowsell and Wendy Houvenaghel to clock a sensational world record at three minutes 21.875 seconds in the pursuit, Armitstead believes there's even better to come.
""I reckon we'll get 3:12 in 2012 – it's attainable, definitely."
Elsewhere, four-time Olympic champion Chris Hoy proved his indomitable spirit with three gold medals on his international return from injury, while Britain claimed 10 golds from 17 events, adding four silver and one bronze.
Hoy added team sprint gold on day three to his keirin and sprint titles – replicating his successes of Beijing.
The men's quartet - Ed Clancy, Geraint Thomas, Steven Burke and Andy Tennant – clocked the second fastest time in history in the Team Pursuit, with a track record of three minutes 54.395 seconds, just 1.081secs down on the world record Britain set at the Beijing Games.
AFTER finishing third in the Three Peaks last month, Crosstrax rider Neil Crampton showed his form once again when he won the Condor Road Club cyclo-cross event at Bradley Woods Scout Camp, near Brighouse.
Crampton crossed the line one minute ahead of his nearest rival – team-mate Simon Maudsley, while Peak Road Club's Dan Cook took third, another minute off the pace.
Cook was crowned top over-40 veteran in the race, while further down the field Adrian Watts of the Rossendale Road Club was best over-50 and Norton Wheelers' Lynn Bland was fastest woman, in 49th spot overall.
Seacroft Wheelers' Nick Barnes won the youth race. Wakefield Juniors Triathlon Club rider Lauren O'Brien was best of the girls.
In other cyclo-cross action, Doncaster-based road racing ace Graham Briggs demonstrated his all-round ability when he won the sixth round of the Lincolnshire Cyclo-Cross League.
