A 'reet gurt' celebration as region's diverse events mark Yorkshire Day

EVENTS across the region will today showcase the best of the region's culture, produce and history as part of Yorkshire Day.

Among the exciting events is one at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield which will tonight host singer Roger Davies and opera stars Judith Gardner Jones and Ben Kerslake.

Money will be raised for local charities including Kirkwood Hospice.

A Yorkshire Dales tearooms has also translated its menu into local dialects to toast the occasion.

Diners at West Winds Yorkshire Tearooms in Buckden, Wharfedale, can chose from specialties such as reet gurt Yorksher puddin's wiv shives ov yam-coddled Whardill kye-meyt and Yorksher moggie.

Stephen Hounsham, who runs the tearooms with partner Lynn Thornborrow, said dialect was a tremendously important part of Yorkshire culture.

"It is gently slipping out of use which is an awful shame."

In Sheffield, council leader Paul Scriven will be handing out white roses in the city centre in celebration and soldiers of 5th Battalion The Rifles will exercise their Freedom of the City of Leeds by parading through the streets.

The annual Yorkshire Day Straw Bale race will get under way at York Maze. The event, which has become a firm favourite, has captured international media attention as one of Britain's quirky sports alongside bog snorkelling and cheese rolling.

The aim is to roll a giant round bale of straw along a 50m course. Racing will take place at York Maze throughout the afternoon today.
