A tricky afternoon for young magicians

TEENAGE Harry Potters are preparing for the finals of a competition which could conjure up a wizard career.

The best of East Yorkshire's junior magical talent will be trying to pull a rabbit out of the hat at the finals of the Spooner Trophy Competition, held in Hull.

The wand-wielding teens taking part in the event on Saturday July 12 are Jack Gleadow, 13, Hull (Andrew Marvel Business and Enterprise College), Joe Harper, 16, Driffield, and Alex Pavinski, 14, Driffield (Driffield School), David Hoyes, 16, Swanland (Hymers College).

Since 1969 the competition has helped discover many local talented magical entertainers who are now professional performers including Derren Litten, who grew up in Hessle, near Hull, whose magic shows led him into acting and writing, including the Catherine Tate Show and Benidorm.

Others who have taken part include Martyn James, comedy illusionist, and British Magical Grand Prix winner, James Long, just returned from performing on a Mediterranean cruise, and Alan Hudson, top British close-up magician who is in his own show at the Edinburgh Festival this summer and many more.

The show at the Live Art Space, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, will be presented by professional magician Paul Kitchen, himself a former Spooner Trophy winner.

Guest magical entertainer is 17-year-old Michael Jordan, from Huddersfield, half of comedy magic illusion duo HiJinx, who last year won the International Brotherhood of Magicians' British Ring Shield competition and 1,000.

The show starts at 2pm but audiences are invited to arrive at 1.30pm to watch close-up magic being performed right under their noses.

Organiser Richard Morrell said: "They have been working hard at their tricks all year and it should be a great fun afternoon for all the family. Come and see the next generation of Harry Potters live."
