A visit to treasure as Charles sees Islamic art exhibition
Emma Dunlop PRINCE Charles is to visit South Yorkshire next week where he will tour an exhibition of Islamic works of art.
The Prince of Wales will visit the exhibition, Palace and Mosque: Islamic Treasures of the Middle East, at the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield city centre on Tuesday.
As patron of the Festival of Muslim Cultures, a national celebration of the cultural and artistic expressions of Islamic people, the prince was keen to see the exhibition, which launches the festival.
As part of the visit, Charles will meet school and community groups who have been working with Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust alongside the exhibition.
Members of the public will also have an opportunity to see the prince as he takes a brief tour of the adjacent Winter Garden.
During his visit, Charles will meet pupils from Waltheof School who will discuss objects in the exhibition.
The prince will also watch a performance by a group of Muslim women and girls, which has been developed as part of the Sheffield Children's Festival, the theme of which for 2006 is celebrating Islamic cultures across the world.
Finally, he will meet pupils from Byron Wood School in the Burngreave area of Sheffield who have produced posters inspired by the exhibition.
A spokeswoman for the galleries said: "The exhibition shows examples of a range of gorgeous decorative arts including ceramics, textiles, carpets, metalwork and glass."
The Festival of Muslim Cultures, which takes places throughout 2006 and into the summer of 2007, involves arts, cultural, educational and youth organisations participating in a celebration aimed at bringing Muslim cultures into the mainstream of British life.the festival
