Airport to offer more holiday flights
Alexandra Wood MORE flights to popular holidayspots and three new destinations have been added to Humberside Airport's summer schedules.
Charter airline Excel Airways had already signed up to provide nine weekly departures from the airport from next summer, but has increased that to 19.
Its decision to commit a second aircraft to the venture means passengers will be able to fly for the first time from Humberside to Fuerteventura, Zante (Zakynthos) and Rhodes.
About 65,000 passengers are predicted to fly from Humberside to destinations both on the Spanish mainland, including Alicante and Malaga, and the Canary Islands, Paphos in Cyprus, and Dalaman on Turkey's Mediterranean coast in what the airport calls one of its "most diverse and exciting programmes to date".
In addition passengers will also be able to fly to Fuerteventura with Thompson on Wednesdays from next summer.
The airline took a hit in 2005 with the opening of Robin Hood Airport at Doncaster but is now predicting summer 2006 passenger figures will more than exceed its 2004 record.
The airport's managing director Rob Goldsmith said: "We were delighted when Excel decided to launch their first- ever programme of flights from Humberside Airport. As we continued to develop the programme we saw that there was potential for Excel to introduce an even bigger and better service.
"This announcement is great news for passengers from the region as there is now more choice than ever before from their local airport."
The airport, which was bought by the Manchester Airport Group six years ago, moved into profit in 2003 after years of losses. It now attracts 530,000 customers a year.
It flies 25 charter flights each week to more than a dozen destinations including Bulgaria and Turkey, and has scheduled services to Aberdeen and Amsterdam. It also accepts freight traffic, and flies oil workers to rigs off the East Coast.
