Alcohol licence hangs in balance
A SHOP which wants to sell alcohol may not get its way after protests from residents.
Calderdale Council has received an application from Londis, the former Big Saver shop, at Highfield Road, Rastrick, to supply alcohol between 7am and 11pm Monday to Saturday and between 8am and 11pm on a Sunday.
But residents have set up a petition, which has collected more than 600 names in just over a week, to stop the application.
Protestor, Jennifer Binns, who has started the campaign, said: “The applicant is applying for a licence until 11pm so it might as well be a public house.
“We have just cleaned this area up and if this goes through we will have teenagers trying to get drink and hanging around outside the shops until after 11pm. We have got the backing from the elderly.”
Petitions are available to sign in all of the shops along the row, Field Lane Primary School and at the Sure Start Centre next door. One is also available in Rastrick Library.
Calderdale Council has extended the objection period by a week to February 23. Anyone who wishes to object should contact Calderdale Council.
