Army contest sees a novice with pace stick march ahead
Brian Dooks A SERGEANT who had not touched a military pace stick until four weeks ago beat experienced handlers to become the individual winner of a competition at the Army Foundation College at Harrogate yesterday.
Sergeant Jonathon Cassidy was in the Cambrai A Team, whose members will now have an opportunity to compete in the Pace Stick Competition at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in July.
The others were Sergeant Anthony Draper, Corporal Kwan Wah Cheung and WO2 Steven Philipps-Harries.
The pace stick – a hinged measuring device, which measures a sergeant major's stride – is used to standardise the pace at which troops march.
Ten teams of non-commissioned officers – all on the instructing staff of the Army college, in Penny Pot Lane, Harrogate – took part in the annual competition.
Judging board president Major Kevin Young said: "Although the teams managed to march down the square, marching up was into the wind and all the teams had problems. But they managed an extremely good standard."
The Foundation College has more than 1,300 young people, who are recruited straight from school at 16 and given a combination of military training and vocat-ional skills. They are regarded as future non-commissioned officers.
