Art lights up city as dark nights start to draw in
AS British Summer Time comes to an end light and sound will brighten the dark as the Illuminating York art festival returns.
The light art installations will use the city landmarks as canvasses – producing huge masterpieces for visitors and residents.
The festival, which starts on Friday and runs until November 1, is supported by Visit York, The Arts Council and York Council. Last year it was said to have brought 2.8m into the city's economy.
Chairman of Illuminating York Stephen Purcell said: "This year our artists have risen to the challenge of engaging more than ever with the public.
"People will be able to quite literally draw with light and this means no two nights will be exactly the same. We hope audiences will come back time and again to see how the artworks change throughout the festival."
This year's headline illuminations are Vespertine by Bright White at the Kings Manor, Museum Gardens. Vespertine is a digital installation illustrating the relationship between predators and their prey.
For three nights from Friday 5Circles by KMA and Pilot Theatre will illuminate St Sampson's Square. Spectators can use their own movement to make visual creations with light.
Drawing with Light by GaiaNova can be seen at The Multangular Tower, Museum Gardens and will allow visitors to see their own creations. Professional artists will add their inspiration at specific times throughout the festival.
Chief Executive of Visit York Gillian Cruddas said: "Each year art lovers from around the country are drawn in to feast their eyes on the spectacle that the festival creates and last year brought in the largest amount of visitors yet, reaching just under 30,000 people."
