Art that you can't escape
Photographer Casey Orr looks on as a series of her pictures are installed on the wall of Leeds Prison.
Residents in the Armley area of the city got a very different view of their local prison yesterday as 24 large-scale photographs appeared on the outside of HMP Leeds.
Ms Orr's collection explores migration, community and home and includes portraits of prisoners, local migrant women and domestic birds. The Armley-based artist said: "The prison is a central landmark in this area but it's almost as if the building is invisible or impenetrable.
"Some of my photographs are of prisoners and their families and, by displaying them on the walls, I hope to make a connection between what's happening on the inside and outside of the building."
The images will also be displayed inside the prison for the benefit of inmates.
The exhibition, entitled Comings and Goings, forms part of the annual I Love West Leeds Festival. It will be on display at Wall 5, HMP Leeds, Hall Lane, Armley, from tomorrow to August 31. It will be displayed at Leeds Museum, Millennium Square, from October to December.
