Artist's exhibition means city can see itself in a new light
INTERNATIONALLY-acclaimed artist Nicolas Moulin is set to hold his first solo exhibition in Britain at Sheffield's Site Gallery this summer.
The exhibition, which will run from tomorrow until Saturday, August 1, will include work created by Mr Moulin about Sheffield and show his insight into the city, which he gained during his residency at Sheffield University's French department.
He works with video, photography, sculpture and sound and said he is "fascinated by strange worlds", be they the vast, deserted landscapes of his Novomon series or the large-scale photographs of his Viderparis series, which show apparently familiar Paris streets where the facades have been concreted over.
Mr Moulin's current interest, which is the built environment and the way people are conditioned by the buildings and spaces that surround them, will form the basis of his exhibition at the gallery. There will be a private viewing of the exhibition tomorrow at 7pm and it will then be open to the public from Saturday.
Exhibition organiser Amanda Crawley Jackson, from Sheffield University's French department, said: "We are very excited by the forthcoming exhibition at Site Gallery, which will be Nicolas' first solo show in the UK.
"It is an opportunity to see work that is very specific to Sheffield and made by an artist of such renown.
"Since he arrived in Sheffield in February this year, Nicolas has been intensely involved in the life of the city and the university, participating in public workshops, working with students and making a fantastic body of photographic work that records his engagement with Sheffield, its architecture and the surrounding area."
During his residency at Sheffield University, Mr Moulin has been involved in a series of seminars, reading groups and workshops with researchers and students.
Coun Tim Rippon from Sheffield Council said: "By 2020, it is predicted that 50 per cent of the world's population will, for the first time, be living in an urban environment.
"Therefore, ongoing creative dialogues such as these, involving people from different backgrounds, practices and
disciplines, are critical if cities are to thrive."
