Bang on time... re-enactment group set up camp at castle
CANNON fire will echo around a Barnsley attraction this weekend as members of the Sealed Knot re-enact a English Civil War battle.
The group will today begin setting up camp at Wentworth Castle Gardens and will be in residence over the weekend for an event which is being billed as the Battle of Tankersley.
Enthusiasts will be dressed as soldiers, including pikemen musketeers and cavalry, and will prime cannons like those used in the fierce battles fought during the conflict.
Others taking part will be dressed as civilians from the period, including merchants, who were known as sutlers, and orators.
The women in the camp will provide demonstrations of period cooking and needlework.
April Ross, of Wentworth Castle Gardens, said: “We are delighted to have secured the services of Sealed Knot. They are a well known, professionally respected provider of re-enactments, and we are thrilled they have agreed to entertain us this weekend.”
The event takes place between 10am and 5pm tomorrow and on Sunday.
Mrs Ross said residents who live in the nearby villages of Stainborough and Hood Green, had been asked to keep pets indoors if possible, because the cannon fire could cause distress to some animals.
