Barbara Taylor Bradford returns to roots to sign book number 82 million

NOVELIST Barbara Taylor Bradford returned to her Yorkshire roots at the weekend.

She was at Harvey Nichols in Briggate, Leeds, to meet fans and take part in a book signing in a visit coinciding with the publication of her latest novel, Breaking The Rules. During the event Ellen Naylor, 17, of Headingley, Leeds, was presented with a copy of the author's 82 millionth book.

The Leeds-born author and former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist is celebrating her career by returning to Yorkshire, the place where she grew up and started her writing career. It is 30 years since the publication of her debut novel A Woman of Substance.

On Saturday she also appeared at The Carriageworks theatre, in Leeds, for an "audience with" event, where she talked about her life and growing up in Yorkshire, her rise to fame and fortune and the family secrets along the way.

She also spoke about her novels and shared what it takes to write a worldwide best seller, and how it feels to celebrate the 30th anniversary of A Woman of Substance. The story of Emma Harte, a Yorkshire parlour maid who goes on to build a business empire from a rented shop in Armley, surviving heartbreak and betrayal on the way, struck a chord with women the world over.
