Bomb scare brings chaos to Leeds

An Army bomb disposal unit used a robot to carry out a controlled explosion on a suspicious packet in Leeds yesterday.

Streets were sealed off and hundreds of workers were evacuated after the bomb scare in the city centre.

A suspicious package was found near an office building off Merrion Way at 10.40am. Police cordoned off streets around the Merrion Centre and called in the bomb disposal unit.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "A controlled explosion has been carried out by the Army bomb disposal squad and the contents of the package have been examined and nothing was found of any concern."

By the afternoon roads were starting to reopen to traffic, and people who had been evacuated were allowed back into the buildings.
