Boy left partially blind by trampoline accident

A 12-YEAR-OLD boy lost his left eye when a metal trampoline spring snapped and shot up into his face.

Danny Stothard was playing with his older brothers in the back garden of their home in Hull when the accident happened.

The terrified sports fan ran into his house, blood pouring down his face, with the three inch metal spring sticking out of his face.

His shaken eldest brother Michael, 16, called for an ambulance while their horrified mum fought against her panic to try to keep Danny calm.

He was rushed to hospital but surgeons were unable to repair the "catastrophic damage" and he now further operations to have an artificial eye fitted.

Mrs Stothard, 35, said: "I'd just nipped out to the shop while the boys were playing on the trampoline. I was nearly home when one of my lads came up to me crying. I asked him what was up and he said 'Danny has got a spring in his eye'. I just ran straight home and I nearly fainted when I saw him, it was horrible, horrific.

"He had blood pouring from his eye and was shouting 'help me, help me'. He was trying to pull it out himself but we told him not to be daft, to stay still and tried to calm him down. It was difficult because I was shaking like a leaf."

Trading standards officers are due to examine the trampoline, which the family bought last summer.

Mrs Stothard added: "Something terrible like this shouldn't be happening, and now the weather is getting better kids will be out playing on these things, so we need to know why this has happened."

Consultant eye surgeon Colin Vize from the Hull and East Yorkshire Eye Hospital said: "The spring ruptured his eye globe and unfortunately caused catastrophic damage."
