Brand Beckham to brush off squad snub
Brand Beckham's pulling power will withstand David's exclusion from the England football squad, experts said yesterday.
Along with wife Victoria, the former England captain is gearing up for the UK launch of his new Intimately Beckham fragrances.
Ian McCawley, deputy editor of Marketing Week, said Brand Beckham would be untarnished by the footballer's performance on the pitch.
"They are so well-known outside of football and music as a couple and a brand that I don't see it having that much effect," he said.
"Anything associated with David Beckham is still going to be very popular."
Beckham will also publicise the new Gillette razor which is launched next week.
A Gillette spokesman said: "David Beckham still remains an international sports and style icon. Any decision on the pitch doesn't make any difference to the relationship with Gillette."
Beckham's hugely successful Instinct fragrance was launched at Superdrug last year.
The chain's fragrance buyer, Tim Hughes, said yesterday: "David Beckham is a style icon first and a footballer second for our customers.
"We don't think his being dropped from the England squad will affect sales whatsoever. In fact we hope that it will give him more time to support the launch of his new fragrance."
Superdrug sold more than 2,000 bottles of David Beckham Instinct the first day it went on sale.
It is gearing up for "huge" customer demand for the new Intimately Beckham fragrances. Packaged in chunky glass cubes, the women's scent is coloured pink while the men's version is golden brown.
They are made by perfume house Coty, which created perfumes for Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The new perfumes bear the "DVB" logo which, according to the Beckham Fragrances website, was "cleverly designed to incorporate his initials".
Victoria was apparently involved in every step of developing the new "eau de Beckham" fragrances, according to Superdrug.
Intimately Beckham will be priced at around 19.45 for a 30ml eau de toilette spray and 25.95 for the 50ml version.
