BREAKING NEWS: Police accused over shoplifting charges
Yorkshire has seen a steep fall in shoplifting charges over the past six years amid fears it is being "decriminalised".
As the Yorkshire Post reveals a 39 per cent drop in shoplifting charges across West Yorkshire since 2000/1 and a similar trend across the region, retailers have criticised police inaction over the crime.
Officers have said more resources would be available to fight the crime if is was one of their key performance indicators, like burglary.
But retail organisations say the lack of police focus on shoplifting has already led to a lack of confidence in the system and a decline in the numbers of offences reported.
