Bridge tolls limit Humber's economy, report claims

SCRAPPING tolls on the Humber Bridge could give the economy in the area a £1.1 billion boost, a report claimed today.

Commissioned by the four councils around the Humber, the report will be used to step up pressure to ditch the charges, which currently cost cars 2.70 each way.

The research said scrapping the tolls would give the region's economy a 39 million benefit in 2009 reaching 1.1 billion in the period 2009-2032.

Reducing the tolls to 1 would benefit the region by 22 million in 2009, and 580 million over the period up to 2032.

It concluded the tolls were a barrier both economically and socially, hampering labour markets but also limiting people's social activities.
